We live in a consumer society. From Netflix to the box office to the smart device in your pocket, the entire world seems geared toward consumers. What can I get out of this product? How will this company benefit me? Who will give me the best deal? Where is the best place to eat? Industries live and die based on how many people consume their product and how much they enjoy it–film, television, dining, mobile apps, cars, even household goods like toilet paper. Star Wars, the Force, and Jesus

(Warning: Great Big Spoilers Ahead!)

I’m a nerd.

Ok, I’m a great big nerd. I’ve already seen the new Star Wars twice. I’ve watched the original trilogy probably fifty times since I was a kid, and I’ve seen the prequel trilogy a couple dozen times (y’know, seeing as they’re not quite as good in the eyes of a great big nerd). I’ve played many Star Wars video games, watched the animated TV series, and seen far too many documentaries on the making of the Star Wars movies. I love it. It’s fantastic!

But I’m also a Christian and a youth pastor. By default, I filter everything through the lens of what God and HIs Word thinks about things. Sometimes this leads me to see parallels and connections that others don’t notice. Star Wars is no exception. It’s a statement that my fellow conservatives throw around a lot: “America used to be a Christian nation, founded on Christian ideals!” I understand the feeling. I do.
